Now in its second generation, the Terex SHM miner is a self-contained, remotely operated mining system able to produce an average of 40,000 to 120,000 tons (32,287 to 106,862 metric tons) of coal per month.  Designed for safety, a three or four man team operates and maintains the highwall mine entirely from the surface.   A touch screen Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) provides the operator with precise remote machine control and full machine diagnostics.

 

The durable Terex SHM miner is both powerful and agile.  Two hydraulically powered cylinders generate 190,000 tons (172, 365 metric tons) of force to cut into coal seams at depths of more than 1,000 feet (304.8m) while its four hydraulically powered tracks allow the system to be moved easily with 360 degree mobility for precise placement at the site.  This unique mining system can extract up to 20 percent of coal reserves and operate on contour

 

Interchangeable electric cutter head modules mine coal seam heights varying from 28 inches (71.1 cm) to 15 feet (4.5 m). The cutter head advances by sumping (pushing forward) and shearing (raising or lowering the cutter head boom).  As the cutter head pushes into the seam, the coal is transferred into a pair of enclosed 18 inch (45.7cm) conveying augers.  Augers then move the coal through enclosed push beams to the base frame conveyor to be discharged at the rear of the machine.
